Resolution of the Committee of the Department of Computer Science at the Vienna University of Technology relating to the current political situation in Austria.
The Committee of the Department of Computer Science at the Vienna University of Technology expresses its strongest possible criticism of the participation of the Austrian Freedom Party (FPÖ) in the Austrian Government. Politicians of this Party adopt a style of rhetoric designed systematically to marginalize minorities and to turn them into scapegoats for current problems, either real or imagined. Far right-wing lines of argument are used, as are expressions and phrases with national socialist connotations. The result is a stirrung up of hatred and resentment.
Furthermore, we object to the Government's appeal for national solidarity in attempting to play down and institutionalize the political trends embodied by such lines of argument. The resulting effects on the intellectual and political climate of our country are disastrous.
As scientists and people working in science we condemn in particular any tendency to promote the use of stereotyped portrayals of foes, to establish simplified black-and-white viewpoints and thus to inhibit differentiated and critical patterns of thought. Because such trends should not be allowed a place in a modern Europe, we demand that the Government step down. At the same time, we demand that the ÖVP terminate at all levels its collaboration with the FPÖ.
